A brace from Gomes helped them to a 2-0 victory in the quarter-finals against Turkey, and the Benfica striking legend continued his fine form in front of goal against France in the semi-finals, opening the scoring in the 19th minute to bag his fourth goal of the tournament. Unfortunately, Les Bleus fought back, drawing level through Thierry Henry in the second-half. The game went into extra-time after it finished 1-1 in regulation time, and a Zinedine Zidane penalty with three minutes to the end of second-half extra-time broke the Portuguese hearts, with the match ending immediately due to the then golden goal rule. Portugal were making their third appearance at the European Championship in 2000, and it was the second time in the history of the competition that the French had stopped them in the semis. They eventually won the tournament for the first time in 2016, pipping France to the coveted silverware in extra-time.
